It was created on April 2, 1266. In 1312, D. Dinis divided the assets of the Count of Barcelos, leaving D. Afonso Sanches, his bastard son and son-in-law of the Count, with a farm and country house in Lumiar, which was renamed Paços do Infante D. Afonso Sanches. In the reign of King Afonso IV, this noble residence acquired the designation of Paço do Lumiar, which is still maintained today.

At the beginning of the eighteenth century, Lumiar was defined as "a place of noble farms, olive groves and vineyards", with the main fruits of the land being wine, wheat, barley and olive oil.
Since the beginning of the nineteenth century, the population of the parish has had a progressive increase.

From 1852 to 1886, this parish was integrated into the municipality of Olivais, and was finally incorporated into the territory of the City of Lisbon, on July 18, 1885.
In the twentieth century, the parish witnessed a strong population increase - 2,840 inhabitants in 1900 to more than 30,000 in 2000, with the old village having lost, in recent decades, almost definitively its characteristics, with the various housing stocks.
